As a custom home builder touching lives and creating beautiful homes in the Delmarva area for over three decades, MIKEN Builders is passionate about improving the communities we live and work in every day. Community outreach is a way of life for our team, many of whom choose to donate their time to charitable causes outside of MIKEN. Below is a small selection of some of the organizations we support at MIKEN, from volunteering our time to collect toys for vulnerable families to donating supplies and expertise to community members in need.
Contractors for a Cause
Michael Cummings, the owner and CEO of MIKEN Builders, was a founding member of Contractors for a Cause (CFAC) in 1998. Over the two decades CFAC has been active in the community, they ’ve provided pro bono services and expertise in the field of home construction, maintenance, and repair to disadvantaged community members. Contractors for a Cause also holds annual events and scholarships to encourage young adults in the Bethany Beach area to thrive and realize their dreams, just like we help homeowners do every day.
Contractors for a Cause also supports local non-profits including Justin’s Beach House and the Justin Jenning’s Foundation. Michael Cummings was instrumental in the fundraising and leadership of the Beach House, and Michael McKone and his wife, Sue McKone, donate their time and leadership to the annual Memorial Day 5K in Bethany Beach every year. Michael Cummings’ passion for giving back to the community has spilled over to every member of the MIKEN team.
Through Contractors for a Cause, MIKEN Builders has improved the lives of many members of our immediate community. Our recent CFAC outreach products have included:
- Constructing a ramp for an elderly couple in Harbeson to increase their mobility, just in time for the holidays. MIKEN partnered with Enoch Construction, Buildering Supply Depot, Shone Lumber, and Sussex Lumber to complete this project.
- Renovating the floor of the Pinetown Community Center in Sussex County so that it is stable, safe, and able to support all of the after-school programs and local activities that this hub of the community provides. MIKEN Builders partnered with Shone Lumber, OC Floor Gallery, and NV Homes to replace and stabilize the community center floor.
United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots
MIKEN Builders is an annual collection location for the USMC Toys for Tots toy drive. Through our involvement, we’ve helped countless needy children to experience the joy of Christmas and united our local community behind this important cause.
The Surfin’ Snowman 5-Miler and 2-Miler
This annual Bethany Beach event is held every December to raise money for local non-profits serving the community. Every year the event continues to grow thanks to the dedicated leadership of Rick Hundley and Ernie Felici, and all of the corporate and community sponsors passionate about the cause.
Wings of Hope
Wings of Hope, a butterfly release supporting the Cancer Support Community of Delaware, is a community-wide event in Sussex County to support all neighbors who have been touched by cancer. MIKEN sponsors this annual event that provides hope and support to many of our neighbors.

Adopt a Family
Each year during the holidays, MIKEN adopts a family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We work with a local outreach program to find a family in need. At Thanksgiving, each member of the MIKEN Team will contribute food or cash that goes toward providing a wonderful turkey dinner for a family in need. At Christmas, we’ll get a wish list from a family with children and exceed their wishes to help bring the spirit of Christmas to their family. Again each one of us will donate money, a toy, or a piece of the Christmas dinner, and our wonderful office staff will complete the purchasing of gifts. Assembling and wrapping the gifts brings the spirit of Christmas in our office.
