A.I. duPont Hospital - Rockland Lab
Location: Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, DE The Rockland lab project for A.I Dupont Hospital involved complete interior demolition of the second floor of an existing office building. One third of the project involved creating a new state of the art research lab, which included approximately 30 lab stations and work areas. One feature of this project was the installation of a new 40’x 12’ air handler unit, which was placed on the building’s roof. Since the existing building was previously used as office space, a new steel structure needed to be installed on the roof and attached to the existing building steel skeleton. Much of the rest of the floor was fit out as lab support and office space, which included a new cafeteria and reception area.
Christiana Care Health Services Hemodialysis Unit
This project involved removal of approx 5,000 sq ft of office space to allow for the installation of a new 14-bed Hemodialysis unit. Large portions of the concrete floor on which the unit was built had to be removed to allow for new drain and water lines that would serve the new patient beds. The project included closing in an existing outdoor courtyard to make room for 7 additional dialysis stations. Due to infection control guidelines, all of the flooring in the area was vinyl sheet flooring with heat-welded seams and integral base.
Christiana Care Health Services Sterile Processing
Infectious control and cleanliness were the most important aspect of this project. This area of the facility is where all instruments are sterilized and prepared for surgery and was in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, the project was divided into 9 phases to maintain operation with minimal disturbance. All of the sterilizers were replaced, along with additional sterilizing and washing equipment. All finishes were upgraded throughout the department. The entire project was completed without incident or any infectious control issues.
Rockford Center Bed Addition
This was an 8,000 square foot addition that included adding new beds, nurses’ station, office space, and group activities rooms. This addition had to be tied-in to a psychotherapy care rehabilitation hospital with full capacity. Special training was required in order to work on this site due to the nature of the residents’ behavior. Extreme care was taken while inside the existing facility, and all work was preformed with a "buddy" system to protect both workers and residents. We are proud to report of a non-incident record during the entire project. The staff and CEO were very proud of the final project.
St. Francis MRI Replacement
Infectious control, as in most hospital projects, was a high priority for this project. However, this was even more of a challenge due to the fact we had to remove a portion of the exterior wall to enable the equipment to be boomed in from the street level. The project consisted of renovations to an existing MRI room to upgrade the facility to new high-tech standards. This included new wall and shielding requirements and a dedicated cooling system for that room. During the project, the hospital was renting an MRI unit that was located in a special trailer. This project was very time sensitive, since the rented equipment had another site to go to. The project was completed on time, saving the hospital from incurring down time due to not having an MRI unit.
